Changing medication
Q: My dog, a 30 lb mixed breed, who lives in the house has been on revolution since early 2000. i recently bought another six months supply of revolution at the beginning of february and started the applications. i have given him 3 doses since the first of february and he still has fleas. i know i have fleas in my yard as i have another dog, a rotty, living outside and he has fleas. because he weighs 160 lb i cannot afford to buy flea protection for him so i just use topical. my question is, do dogs get immune to the effects of meds after a period of time as humans do? if so, i need to switch but am concerned about overdoing the little guy. is it safe to switch and apply right away?
A: Some products do stop working in some pets andit may have to do with resistance on flea end which is only inevitable as these are used over time. you could try another product like frontline plus or advantage.

Arthritis
Q: We have a 14 yr old 24 lb mixed breed terrier that is beginning to experience joint pain. he limps pretty much all of the time when he walks now. our vet has prescribed dermamaxx 25 mg one tablet daily. is there a less expensive medication available? can you supply it?
A: Like any new drug deramaxx is not inexpensive. it works well and is very safe. i would not try anything else.

What kind of inexpensive dog food do you suggest?
Q: Hello i have a 2yr old syb husky that i recued from the animal shelter. she is a wonderfull dog. i had been using iam's chicken adult dog food. i noticed that she was eating grass to settle her stomach. i thought this was a break in period till she got used to the new food. i have just ran out of the 40lb bag and she was still nibling at the grass in the back yard. i purchased some wal-mart brand ol-roy the performance dog food for active dogs which she is. she loves it she eats it up like there's no tomorrow. a friend told me though that it is garbage. i feed her a vitamin everyday and also joint suppliments just incase she has any problems with her joints later on. my question is. is the ol-roy dog food really that much different than the other expensive dog food that is on the market. is there a better inexpensive dog food that you would recomend. i seen how you suggested the all natural dog food as the best to buy. please don't get me wrong if i have to spend more money on her food i will do so. but i do not wish to spend more if it is not more of a benefit to her. thank you
A: I will answer your question with analogy about status of our own meat supply whic is certainly in question with mad cow disease and other bacterial parasite risks evident in media. well most of meat that goes into cheaper dog foods is made from rejects of human consumption as well as other horrid sources. i would stick with natural brand foods like pet guard, wyssong, etc. only one i would even consider that is widely distributed is natures recipe

Black head ingrown nipple
Q: 3 year old male pit bull. he has a nipple growth in the middle of his stomach directly between his nipples. it appeared to be a black head. it finally popped as he scratched it - i removed the black head tip and treated it with antiseptic to stop the bleeding. however the nipple growth is still there? what should i do about the ingrown nipple? had i not seen it bleed, i'm concerned he could have bled to death. appreciate your feedback.
A: I doubt he would have bled to death as not big blood supply to these. i would have vet check it out as sometimes these are prone to infection and sometimes they can be removed

Tapeworm treatment
Q: Cat had fleas, treated. now has tapeworm, tried to treat. purchased tapeworm treatment pills at local pet supply. no instructions came w/the 3 pills. staff in store, no knowledge. how to tx? 1 pill x 3 days, all 3 at once, 1 pill weekly?? no phone number on bottle either. how should it be done?
A: I don't know what medication you purchased. if you give me the name of the product, i can try to look it up and answer your question.

Feline acne - chin
Q: My 10 year old (15+ lbs.) cat rusty developed a bumpy rash on his chin 3 weeks ago. the vet diagnosed feline acne and advised me not to use plasitic feeding dishes. i have always used ceramic and wash them after every meal. she provided a topical cream to be applied twice daily. i did and the rash became redder and finally became open sores. upon return to the vet rusty was given a shot of "antibiotic" and liquid cefafroxil (5 day supply) with instructions that 3ccs be administered daily. the vet also advised that rusty needs to be brought back in 5 days and i should expect this to be very hard to clear up and ongoing reoccurrences in future. treatment so far has cost $240 and i can expect each additional vist to the vet to cost from $50 to $110. i can't afford this treatment. please advise other options for obtaining appropriate medication for rusty. thanks!
A: You could try topical 2.5 percent benzoal peroxide cream over the counter or perhaps even natural aloe vera gel or vitamin e applied to area. most of time these cases of feline acne bother the owner more than the cat and the more aggressive you get, sometimes gets worse.
