PhenobarbQ: My dog has been on liquid phenobarb for three years now. is there another medication that petmeds sells that is similar and how much is it? i pay for 1 months supply of pheno at the vet $20. my dog takes 2cc of pheno every 12 hours. A: We do not currently sell phenobarbital. you can check with your local pharmacist as to how much he would charge as it is commonly available.
AsthmaQ: Hello my dog has been diagnosed with asthma but has not been given any treatment plan. yhe only treatment consists of a rush visit to the vet's office where he gets a cortisone shot and short- term dose of temeril. he is a 6 lb. yorkie. is there a maintenance medication? also, it is quite frightening when his wheezing worsens. are there rescue treatments we could administer ourselves? i myself am a severe asthmatic and physician as well. i am familiar with albuterol, theophylline, etc. but i have no experience with canines. i would appreciate any information. A: Sounds like he needs chronic meds like aminophylline or theophylline at dose of 5 mg per pound twice daily. also some of these dogs need low dose cortisone therapy during flareups so good to have supply of that around
Kind of heartworm medication to giveQ: We have a cocker spaniel mix who is 6 years old and has been on heartworm preventive for quite sometime now. we got it from our vet but i guess it leaked out of its vial and we are now out. we usually got a years supply and gave once a month. it was liquid and we gave 0.2cc a month orally and it had to be refrigerated.the f=bottle got wet and the name ran off. our vet is not close and we were wanting to see about oprdering some for her, but do ot know what kind to get. A: I am not familiar with a heartworm preventative given as you describe.
Substitute for rimadylQ: My spayed female dog, 10 years old,has lately been yelping prior to going out to urinate. i recently took her to her vet and brought a urine sample. urine was screened and came back negative. this yelping does occur mostly when she first wakes. vet examined her and concluded she may have arthritis. vet recommended rimadyl,75mg,twice a day for 14 days and to go back if no adverse to meds and will prescribe month supply. i would like to know if there is something else that can be given that would not have the risk of liver complications? would a asprin daily do the trick? A: You could try low doses of aspirin at 5 mg per pound once to twice daily with food(not tylenol) stop if any digestive side effects. you also could try glucosamine product like super joint enhancer from 1800petmeds as well as extra antoxidant nutrients like vitamin e at 400iu daily and vitamin c in form of ester c at 1000 mg twice daily

Changing medicationQ: My dog, a 30 lb mixed breed, who lives in the house has been on revolution since early 2000. i recently bought another six months supply of revolution at the beginning of february and started the applications. i have given him 3 doses since the first of february and he still has fleas. i know i have fleas in my yard as i have another dog, a rotty, living outside and he has fleas. because he weighs 160 lb i cannot afford to buy flea protection for him so i just use topical. my question is, do dogs get immune to the effects of meds after a period of time as humans do? if so, i need to switch but am concerned about overdoing the little guy. is it safe to switch and apply right away? A: Some products do stop working in some pets andit may have to do with resistance on flea end which is only inevitable as these are used over time. you could try another product like frontline plus or advantage.

Interceptor vs revolutionQ: My 8 month old pup (44lbs)has been on interceptor since about 8wks my question is would it be wise to switch to revolution by getting a 12 month supply.(she is also on frontline + ) thank you joe lo sciuto A: The only reason to change would be if what you are curently using is not working.

Cut that seems infectedQ: I have a cat that has a small cut on it's tail that seems infected. i'm sure he probably just needs and anti biotic. do i have to take him to the vet or is there another way to get the antibiotic for him. also is human antibiotic the same. for example amoxacillin? mike A: Human antibiotic amoxicllin is same as one often prescribed in vet medicine. dose in cat is 50 to 100 mg twice daily depending upon size of cat. need vet prescription for antibiotics. can try topical calendula from health food store until can get evaluated
