Growing puppy, bordering med/lg weight
Q: My lab puppy is now 16 weeks old and 40 pounds, and i would like to start her on topical flea medicine. first, which medication do you recommend? also, i'm not sure whether to buy a three month supply for medium or large dogs, since she's medium right now, but will probably be large for her next two doses. please advise, and many thanks!
A: I usually recommend frontline plus. you need the medium for now and when the pets weight exceeds 45 lbs you will need the large. the smallest package is a 3 pack.
Shop for: frontline plus, frontline

Asthma
Q: Hello my dog has been diagnosed with asthma but has not been given any treatment plan. yhe only treatment consists of a rush visit to the vet's office where he gets a cortisone shot and short- term dose of temeril. he is a 6 lb. yorkie. is there a maintenance medication? also, it is quite frightening when his wheezing worsens. are there rescue treatments we could administer ourselves? i myself am a severe asthmatic and physician as well. i am familiar with albuterol, theophylline, etc. but i have no experience with canines. i would appreciate any information.
A: Sounds like he needs chronic meds like aminophylline or theophylline at dose of 5 mg per pound twice daily. also some of these dogs need low dose cortisone therapy during flareups so good to have supply of that around

Bark control
Q: I have a 5 year toy poodle who thinks it is her job to alert me to every sound outdoors. we used to live in a rural area, where i appreciated her letting me know if someone came to the house. currently we are living in a very close neighborhood and her barking at every outdoor sound (cars driving by, people walking by, other dogs barking, the doorbell) is not quite so appreciated. it means that she is barking much more than ever before. any chance i can break her of this. i've heard about collars that shock when the dog barks but i don't like that idea too much. i've just heard about a citrus or citronella collar that, i guess, gives a squirt when they bark. does this work and where do i find one?
A: Might be worth a try. likely can get at natural pet supply store or health food store that carries pet products

Overdose my l2 lb. dog on topspot plus
Q: I used topspot plus and it seemed to work for about 2 weeks. he is back to scratching and licking himself and i have found a few fleas on him. what is the next step i should take to get rid of these bugs. i'm not sure if they are in my house bit it is driving me crazy thinking that maybe they are. i was told i should give him another l/2 doze of the 3-month supply, wait 30 days and do it again for the next 4 months. it was also suggested to bomb the house. i'm concerned that i may make him sick but i need to get rid of these bugs!!!!! please help. thanks
A: No. don't use another dose of the frontline. to effectively treat a flea problem, you need to treat the pet, the house and the yard.

Viokase powder & tablets
Q: I have a female akita that will need to take this for the rest of her life and was wondering if the powder & pills are the same or if one is better than the other. the vet said that the pills may not work as well as the powder. do you know? there is quite a price difference between the two items.
A: Chemically the powder and the pills are the same. however, the concentration is different. you would need more tablets for an equivalent dose of the powder. also, i understand there are manufacturing and/or supply issues with viokase. you may have to use a product called pancrezyme instead. this is generically equivalent to viokase-v.
Shop for: pancrezyme

Addisons
Q: My 4 yr old english pointer has addisons. we currently get the 28 day percorten injection. i would like to administer it myself. the invoice for today was for," quantity 2 percorten 25 mg/ml. this is what she gets every 28 days. any suggetions woulg be highly appreciated. thanks, greg
A: We carry percorten and can supply it to you with a prescription from your veterinarian.

Specific medication requested
Q: My vet has prescribed megestral acetate 20mg for my cat's skin condition. the vet said it is simply a reoccurring condition that my cat will probably have forever. within a couple of times giving my cat a half of pill (every other day), he stops scratching the fur off and stops drawing blood all over his body. in other words, he returns to the normally happy and moody cat that he is, however, i cannot find it on any of the on-line vet 'stores.' can you help supply me with this medication???
A: I would seek services of another vet. this is a highly dangerous drug in my opinioon as not currently recommended or used by any experts that i know of for any conditions due to cancer risk, diabetes, etc
