Scratching his eyes....Q: I have an other year and a half scottish terrier scrappy who is constantly itching his eyes. the vet said just give him benedryl. i don't want to keep giving my baby that. and now the hair around his eyes is very thin. you can see more whitish color than fur. not bad but i notice it. what do you think? A: This breed is very prone to allergies and if bad enough sometimes antihistamines like this can be helpful on some occasions. i also like to combine these with fatty acids added to diet such as derm caps from 1800petmeds as well as prozyme as well. also consider low allergy natural diets like wellness fisn and potato or california natural lamb and rice diet by natura. long term best way to avoid drugs is to consider blood or skin allergy testing to find out what allergic to if want to avoid drugs

KittensQ: Hello: i have recently accquired new kittens. they are 26 days old. some of them are haqving problems with eye infection and some have recently started to vomit. these kittens are nursing on three different mothers. does this have anything to do with their problems? what should i do? A: I would try having kittens stick with one mother or wean slowly on to wet kitten food or at least supplment with kitten milk replacer. also many kittens this age have worms so may want to worm with nemex from 1800petmeds. also for eyes should really have vet visit to rule out viral and bacterial infections. in meantime could clean out eyes with dilute salt solution by mixing 1/4 seasalt from health food store with 1 cup of distilled water and stir well, and apply a few drops to eyes a few times daily in addition to one drop of cod liver oil to eyes once daily

Ivermectin liquidQ: My friend, a veterinarian, passed away a couple of years ago. for years she made up a solution of ivermectin (which i purchased at the local farm store) and another liguid(?) and gave it to me for my dogs. i have recently run out of the medication. the dosage was determined by weight and was put on their food once a month. can you tell me what the other component may have been? where to purchase it? what the dilution needs to be? how safe it would be to use? and what the shelf life would be? the bottle that she prepared for me would last me a couple of years. thanks!! A: I am not familiar with this combination to answer any of your questions. sounds like old time remedy. i would simply purchase a generic heartworm preventative like iverheart from 1800petmeds which is certainly cheap enough

Dog eating grassQ: I'm looking for a substitute for "st. johns, spirulina & barley grass tablets." does petmeds offer anything? if so, what should i order? my dog is an 11 year old black lab/golden retriever mix and weighs 115 lbs. he is not over weight, just big, over six feet long laying flat. about once a month, for entire life, he won't eat for a day, eats grass, thorws up, and then he's fine. i give him pepto-bismal, per my vet and these barley tablets. it settles his stomach. i can't find these tablets anywhere. he probably eats rabbit pellets, cardboard boxes, i even found a 9mm round in his stool once. any help will be appreciated. A: I would check with 1800petmeds pharmacist if anything available. other option would be to buy these things from local health food store
