Dosage
Q: I have three cats, flea meds are expensive. is there any difference in dosage of medicines if i buy a six months supply of advantage, giving each cat 1 dose for two months, or is the first dose in this six month pack stronger or something? all three cats weigh about the same, so they'd use the same pill strength. thanks in advance.
A: Each monthly dose of advantage contains the same amount of medication. in order for this product to be effective you need to follow the manufacturer's directions and use 1 tube on each cat once a month.

Black head ingrown nipple
Q: 3 year old male pit bull. he has a nipple growth in the middle of his stomach directly between his nipples. it appeared to be a black head. it finally popped as he scratched it - i removed the black head tip and treated it with antiseptic to stop the bleeding. however the nipple growth is still there? what should i do about the ingrown nipple? had i not seen it bleed, i'm concerned he could have bled to death. appreciate your feedback.
A: I doubt he would have bled to death as not big blood supply to these. i would have vet check it out as sometimes these are prone to infection and sometimes they can be removed

My baby
Q: I have a 9 year old shar-pei and she has really started showing signs of pain when getting up and walking. i have been giving her the pedigree jonit care and that has helped some but not like i was hoping. i am not due to see the vet again until september. the last time i was in to see him last year, he gave me a week supply of some type of medication for her aches and pains. i could not tell if there was a difference or not in the week that i was giving it to her. i can not remember the name of the medication that he gave me but i really think that i need something better then the pedigree joint care that i have been giving her. i can not stand to watch her hurt and will do anything to help her. please tell me what i should give her. thank you very much for your help. michelle rose
A: I would try deramaxx from 1800petmeds in conjunction with a glucosamine product like glycoflex or cosequin

Skin condition
Q: I have a white toy poodle - he has developed bumps on one side of his body that had green puss coming out...as soon as i realized this i cleaned the area and poured perioxide to "boil" the area....this seemed to help and dry the area...all but in the bed of his hind-leg where he licks alot. this area is still red and looks irritated....what can i do? the other bumps are still there but still appear to be all dried up and no longer oozing with green puss...thanks
A: Try antibacterial shampoos every few days with one such as chlorihexiderm shampoo from 1800petmeds. if persists, see vet for likely diagnosis and prescription antibiotics, etc

Cat is fiv positive and always getting mouth infection
Q: I have a cat i adopted that is fiv positive. jimmy is always getting a mouth infection. the vet has me give him zithromax but it is $45.00 for a 2 week supply. is there anything natural i can give him or something that will assist in taking it away forever. i have had his teeth cleaned twice in the last 4 months to clean out the infection. thank you
A: I would have consult with homeopathic vet who can work with you long term on building up his immune system over time. many do phone consultations www.theavh.org. not a quick fix but takes time and patience.

Hot spots
Q: About 3 months ago my dog, max, started getting bald spots on his hind legs. then they started right at the top of his front legs by the joints. i brought him to the vet and they said it may be a mite problem. they did a couple skin scrapes but were not able to find any. they still decided to treat him for them anyway and said they are hard to find on the dog. they said to give him fish oil pills once a day and they prescribed ivermectin to him. i give him .9 ml once a day. it seemed to clear up but then it came back even worst and now he is biting those spots as well. i've been giving him ivermectin again for the last 2 weeks and it is not making any progress this time. it cost about 85$$$ for a 2 week supply. any ideas on what else i can do??
A: I would see different vet. you need definitive diagnosis here as might not be mite problem at all. i would recommend vet dermatologist consult or some vet who will do skin biopsy to get to cause so right treatment is done

German shepherd
Q: Our 8 year old male german shepherd was taken to the vet one week ago and treated for skin infection. he was given a bath with sebolux and prescribed cephalexin capsules 500mg (4 capsules every 12 hours) also he was given prednisone 20mg once a day. after 3 days of treatment we noticed he was very lethargic, loss of appetite and his lower lip hanging down on one side accompanied by drooling. we contacted the vet and she advised to stop medication and give him benadryl 12.5 mg. he was given 2 1/2 tablets. two days after discontinued medication, he continues to drool, his lip has not improved, his energy not restored and he eats but very little. is it possible that he had an adverse reaction to the medication? are these syptoms serious and if so, should we seek immediate assistance? thank you
A: Sounds like new problem with nervous system supply to facial structures. take back to vet for re evaluation

Heartgard plus
Q: Hi, i just took my dogs to the vet for their annual checkup and shots. i usually get the heartgard plus for 12 months through the vet. eventhough i give the medicine religiously every month on the same day, my vet is requireing the heartworm blood test at $50.00 per dog. if i buy the heartgard plus from your pharmacy, will you also require, when you contact my vet, that the bloodtest be done before you prescribe the meds? also can i order two six month supplies for each of my dogs? thanks so much, jennie
A: Heartworm products require a prescription from your vet. if the veterinarian you are using requires annual testing then you will have no choice. in answer to your second question, you can order a 12 pack for each of them. if you wish to save money, we can supply the iverhart plus that is the generic equivalent for the heartgard plus.
