How to re-introduce older cat to use litter boxQ: My 9 year-old cat is both inside and outside. as a kitten he would use the litter box but he much prefers the great outdoors. in his older years i feel he will live longer if we can keep him inside more, but he refuses the litter box and will wait patiently at the door until we let him out. is it fair to him to try to keep him inside now? is there a particular litter now that would entice him to use the litter box? thank you! A: You could try another litter box and a litter known as everclean which you can get at most pet supply outlet stores. if that not help then i dont see problem in letting him go outside

Skin conditionQ: I have a white toy poodle - he has developed bumps on one side of his body that had green puss coming out...as soon as i realized this i cleaned the area and poured perioxide to "boil" the area....this seemed to help and dry the area...all but in the bed of his hind-leg where he licks alot. this area is still red and looks irritated....what can i do? the other bumps are still there but still appear to be all dried up and no longer oozing with green puss...thanks A: Try antibacterial shampoos every few days with one such as chlorihexiderm shampoo from 1800petmeds. if persists, see vet for likely diagnosis and prescription antibiotics, etc

Head tremors and clawing earsQ: My black tabby cat was treated last spring for an ear problem which the vet prescribed tresaderm cause she was shaking her head and clawing her ears and now it has returned. the treatment was very long in duration but she finally responded. i would like to purchase more tresaderm. could you answer me as soon as possible. she gets so upset when a vet has to see her. i have to use a mobile vet as i am disabled and can't transport her to an office. A: We do have tresaderm and can supply it with the approval of a veterinarian. we can call for the approval with your permission.
HivesQ: This past holiday weekend my 9 month old chihuahua woke up with something that looked like hives on his head and muzzle. i was concerned and took him to an emergency vet service. they treated him with a shot of benedryl. they said they treat all hives this way no matter how they come about. i was told to keep on eye on him and if he developed breathing problems to let them know and bring him in. about three hours later the hives came back on his head and face, so they said i should give his 1/4 of benedryl(25mg) tablet that i already had for my own allergies. he seems to have lost his appetite. my question is how can these hives be prevented in the future? A: No sure way to prevent unless find out what he is reacting to allergically which is sometimes difficult. having good supply of benadryl on hand is best you can do
Specific medication requestedQ: My vet has prescribed megestral acetate 20mg for my cat's skin condition. the vet said it is simply a reoccurring condition that my cat will probably have forever. within a couple of times giving my cat a half of pill (every other day), he stops scratching the fur off and stops drawing blood all over his body. in other words, he returns to the normally happy and moody cat that he is, however, i cannot find it on any of the on-line vet 'stores.' can you help supply me with this medication??? A: I would seek services of another vet. this is a highly dangerous drug in my opinioon as not currently recommended or used by any experts that i know of for any conditions due to cancer risk, diabetes, etc
