Levothyroxine
Q: How often should a thyroid test be done on a 7 yr old maltese who has been on the drug 2 yrs? how many months of the drug can be ordered/filled by you with a vets o.k. at one time.
A: How often to test is dependant on your pets response to treatment. if the pet is stabilized, your veterinarian may only need to do a test every 6 to 12 months. if your pet shows signs of hypothyroid or hyperthyroid, testing may need to be done every 3 months. in stabilized pets, and based on the veterinarians willingness, it is possible to have a prescription filled for a 1 year supply.

Head shaking
Q: How is one to know the difference between prescription and non prescription medication when the vet gives you all medications?
A: The prescription medication, which by the way we do carry, has a statement printed on the package that reads, to be dispensed by, or on, the prescription of a veterinarian. the non-prescription products do not have such a notation. if you are not sure, please call and we can supply you with specific information.

Dosage
Q: I have three cats, flea meds are expensive. is there any difference in dosage of medicines if i buy a six months supply of advantage, giving each cat 1 dose for two months, or is the first dose in this six month pack stronger or something? all three cats weigh about the same, so they'd use the same pill strength. thanks in advance.
A: Each monthly dose of advantage contains the same amount of medication. in order for this product to be effective you need to follow the manufacturer's directions and use 1 tube on each cat once a month.

Expiration dates
Q: I have a foster cat from my shelter. she has fleas so the shelter gave my some program to use on her since she is a bit feral and not easily handled. when i got home i saw that the program had and expiraton date of 8/97 on it!! should i still use it?
A: No. this product expired 7 years ago. i would order a new supply of program, which is over the counter. i would also notify the shelter to have them remove the expired product.

Heartgard plus
Q: Hi, i just took my dogs to the vet for their annual checkup and shots. i usually get the heartgard plus for 12 months through the vet. eventhough i give the medicine religiously every month on the same day, my vet is requireing the heartworm blood test at $50.00 per dog. if i buy the heartgard plus from your pharmacy, will you also require, when you contact my vet, that the bloodtest be done before you prescribe the meds? also can i order two six month supplies for each of my dogs? thanks so much, jennie
A: Heartworm products require a prescription from your vet. if the veterinarian you are using requires annual testing then you will have no choice. in answer to your second question, you can order a 12 pack for each of them. if you wish to save money, we can supply the iverhart plus that is the generic equivalent for the heartgard plus.

Substitute for rimadyl
Q: My spayed female dog, 10 years old,has lately been yelping prior to going out to urinate. i recently took her to her vet and brought a urine sample. urine was screened and came back negative. this yelping does occur mostly when she first wakes. vet examined her and concluded she may have arthritis. vet recommended rimadyl,75mg,twice a day for 14 days and to go back if no adverse to meds and will prescribe month supply. i would like to know if there is something else that can be given that would not have the risk of liver complications? would a asprin daily do the trick?
A: You could try low doses of aspirin at 5 mg per pound once to twice daily with food(not tylenol) stop if any digestive side effects. you also could try glucosamine product like super joint enhancer from 1800petmeds as well as extra antoxidant nutrients like vitamin e at 400iu daily and vitamin c in form of ester c at 1000 mg twice daily
