Tapeworm treatment
Q: Cat had fleas, treated. now has tapeworm, tried to treat. purchased tapeworm treatment pills at local pet supply. no instructions came w/the 3 pills. staff in store, no knowledge. how to tx? 1 pill x 3 days, all 3 at once, 1 pill weekly?? no phone number on bottle either. how should it be done?
A: I don't know what medication you purchased. if you give me the name of the product, i can try to look it up and answer your question.

Hair loss
Q: Found fleas on my cats neck under a id collar. she now has patches of fur missing, and continuous grooming and scratching. removed collar, what else can i do. she also has some missing fur at the base of her tail. i have sprayed her for fleas, but what can i do for the irritated skin?
A: She should be treated for fleas with either advantage or frontline. also treat house for fleas as well. for itching, try oral chlorphenirmine at dose of 2 mg twice daily. add prozyme and derm caps to meals from 1800petmeds. see vet if symptoms persist
Shop for: prozyme, 1800petmeds, advantage, frontline

Kind of heartworm medication to give
Q: We have a cocker spaniel mix who is 6 years old and has been on heartworm preventive for quite sometime now. we got it from our vet but i guess it leaked out of its vial and we are now out. we usually got a years supply and gave once a month. it was liquid and we gave 0.2cc a month orally and it had to be refrigerated.the f=bottle got wet and the name ran off. our vet is not close and we were wanting to see about oprdering some for her, but do ot know what kind to get.
A: I am not familiar with a heartworm preventative given as you describe.

Viokase powder & tablets
Q: I have a female akita that will need to take this for the rest of her life and was wondering if the powder & pills are the same or if one is better than the other. the vet said that the pills may not work as well as the powder. do you know? there is quite a price difference between the two items.
A: Chemically the powder and the pills are the same. however, the concentration is different. you would need more tablets for an equivalent dose of the powder. also, i understand there are manufacturing and/or supply issues with viokase. you may have to use a product called pancrezyme instead. this is generically equivalent to viokase-v.
Shop for: pancrezyme

Black head ingrown nipple
Q: 3 year old male pit bull. he has a nipple growth in the middle of his stomach directly between his nipples. it appeared to be a black head. it finally popped as he scratched it - i removed the black head tip and treated it with antiseptic to stop the bleeding. however the nipple growth is still there? what should i do about the ingrown nipple? had i not seen it bleed, i'm concerned he could have bled to death. appreciate your feedback.
A: I doubt he would have bled to death as not big blood supply to these. i would have vet check it out as sometimes these are prone to infection and sometimes they can be removed

Yeast infection
Q: I have a cocker spaniel and every few months his skin turns deep pink, he itches and scratches uncontrollably then his skin gets large flaky patches all over his body. the vet prescribes a two week supply of antibiotic each time this occurs however i would like to use a preventive care to keep this from happening. can you tell me if there is anything available?
A: You need to address potential underyling causes or problem will occur. some of possibiliites include food allergy(common in this breed esp if no seasonal pattern to skin issue), inhalent allergies, or thyroid issues. have vet workup for these

Yellow lab
Q: I own a 5yr old yellow lab, who has black stuff in both ears and black stuff outside his ears, i've been treating him for earmites and it has'nt cleared up. he shakes his head and whines when i clean them. please help! he is an outside dog. this problem just started in all the time i've had him. is there something i can get him in he pet supply store for this?
A: You could try broad acting antbacterial/antifungal anti inflammatory drops like tresaderm twice daily to ears. however best to have vet exam so he/she could get cytology of ear discharge to see if is bacterial or yeast overgrowth in ears and culture ears if necessary. also often need to address underyling allergies or thyroid issues in this breed which vet can do or problems will relapse
