Asthma
Q: Hello my dog has been diagnosed with asthma but has not been given any treatment plan. yhe only treatment consists of a rush visit to the vet's office where he gets a cortisone shot and short- term dose of temeril. he is a 6 lb. yorkie. is there a maintenance medication? also, it is quite frightening when his wheezing worsens. are there rescue treatments we could administer ourselves? i myself am a severe asthmatic and physician as well. i am familiar with albuterol, theophylline, etc. but i have no experience with canines. i would appreciate any information.
A: Sounds like he needs chronic meds like aminophylline or theophylline at dose of 5 mg per pound twice daily. also some of these dogs need low dose cortisone therapy during flareups so good to have supply of that around

Hot spots
Q: About 3 months ago my dog, max, started getting bald spots on his hind legs. then they started right at the top of his front legs by the joints. i brought him to the vet and they said it may be a mite problem. they did a couple skin scrapes but were not able to find any. they still decided to treat him for them anyway and said they are hard to find on the dog. they said to give him fish oil pills once a day and they prescribed ivermectin to him. i give him .9 ml once a day. it seemed to clear up but then it came back even worst and now he is biting those spots as well. i've been giving him ivermectin again for the last 2 weeks and it is not making any progress this time. it cost about 85$$$ for a 2 week supply. any ideas on what else i can do??
A: I would see different vet. you need definitive diagnosis here as might not be mite problem at all. i would recommend vet dermatologist consult or some vet who will do skin biopsy to get to cause so right treatment is done

Substitute for rimadyl
Q: My spayed female dog, 10 years old,has lately been yelping prior to going out to urinate. i recently took her to her vet and brought a urine sample. urine was screened and came back negative. this yelping does occur mostly when she first wakes. vet examined her and concluded she may have arthritis. vet recommended rimadyl,75mg,twice a day for 14 days and to go back if no adverse to meds and will prescribe month supply. i would like to know if there is something else that can be given that would not have the risk of liver complications? would a asprin daily do the trick?
A: You could try low doses of aspirin at 5 mg per pound once to twice daily with food(not tylenol) stop if any digestive side effects. you also could try glucosamine product like super joint enhancer from 1800petmeds as well as extra antoxidant nutrients like vitamin e at 400iu daily and vitamin c in form of ester c at 1000 mg twice daily
Shop for: vitamin, joint enhancer, 1800petmeds

Yellow lab
Q: I own a 5yr old yellow lab, who has black stuff in both ears and black stuff outside his ears, i've been treating him for earmites and it has'nt cleared up. he shakes his head and whines when i clean them. please help! he is an outside dog. this problem just started in all the time i've had him. is there something i can get him in he pet supply store for this?
A: You could try broad acting antbacterial/antifungal anti inflammatory drops like tresaderm twice daily to ears. however best to have vet exam so he/she could get cytology of ear discharge to see if is bacterial or yeast overgrowth in ears and culture ears if necessary. also often need to address underyling allergies or thyroid issues in this breed which vet can do or problems will relapse

Kind of heartworm medication to give
Q: We have a cocker spaniel mix who is 6 years old and has been on heartworm preventive for quite sometime now. we got it from our vet but i guess it leaked out of its vial and we are now out. we usually got a years supply and gave once a month. it was liquid and we gave 0.2cc a month orally and it had to be refrigerated.the f=bottle got wet and the name ran off. our vet is not close and we were wanting to see about oprdering some for her, but do ot know what kind to get.
A: I am not familiar with a heartworm preventative given as you describe.
