Flea & tick control for puppiesQ: What should i purchase for a growing puppy? he is 15 pounds and about 10 weeks old. i hate to purchase a 3 month supply of something he will outgrow before it is all used. A: You don't say how big he will be. if he's going to be under 50 pounds you could get the medium size of lets say frontline plus and when you put on the first one you don't apply the complete tube.

Ordering advantageQ: We have 2 dogs weighing 56lbs and 35lbs. recently, they have exhibited flea problems for the first time. we are considering advantage. how much do we order for the initial application. the order forms refer to packets. thank you A: You can choose advantage first by your dog's weight, and then by the number of months supply you want, 4,6 or 12.

The amount to orderQ: Katie is a 15 yrs. llhasa apso and has been taking heartguard for her entire life. my vet has always given her 8 months supply of this medicine yet i see they only come in 6 month increments or 12 month increments. does she need to take it for 8 months since she is an inside dog most of the time? A: We can make arrangements to send you 8 months supply. please contact our customer service department for assistance.
Signs and symptoms of thyroid diseaseQ: Our 2 year old german wirehaired pointer, sadie, has had a few bouts of ear infections, sodium burns between her toes and recently has had what i thought to be a "contact dermatitis", along with a thining of her fur on her flanks. our vet was not sure that it was contact dermatitis and prescribed sadie with a 10 day supply of cephalexin and a steroidal spray (that we used for the sodium burns) to spray on the affected area. we were told that there may be a problem with her thyroid. my question is what are the signs and symptoms of a thyroid problem both hypo- and hyper-? A: Hyperthyroid is rare to non existant in dogs. underactive thyroid is more common and signs are very diverse and can include recurrent infections of skin/ears, weight gain, lethargy, intolerance to cool(i.e. heat seeking), dull dry hair coat, as well as many others.
Question about heartgard medicineQ: My dog weighs 16 lbs. can i buy a 45/50 lb box of heartgard and break the pill in half and thus have a years supply at the price of a 6 month supply? also... if my dog is on heartgard year round, do i have to have them re-examined every year? A: To ensure that the pet gets the full, required dose, it is recommended that you do not split the tablet in half. if your pet is on heartworm medication year round you may not need a heartworm test every year. it is up to your veterinarian but many veterinarians test every 2 years for pets on year round prevention.

Growing puppy, bordering med/lg weightQ: My lab puppy is now 16 weeks old and 40 pounds, and i would like to start her on topical flea medicine. first, which medication do you recommend? also, i'm not sure whether to buy a three month supply for medium or large dogs, since she's medium right now, but will probably be large for her next two doses. please advise, and many thanks! A: I usually recommend frontline plus. you need the medium for now and when the pets weight exceeds 45 lbs you will need the large. the smallest package is a 3 pack.

Black head ingrown nippleQ: 3 year old male pit bull. he has a nipple growth in the middle of his stomach directly between his nipples. it appeared to be a black head. it finally popped as he scratched it - i removed the black head tip and treated it with antiseptic to stop the bleeding. however the nipple growth is still there? what should i do about the ingrown nipple? had i not seen it bleed, i'm concerned he could have bled to death. appreciate your feedback. A: I doubt he would have bled to death as not big blood supply to these. i would have vet check it out as sometimes these are prone to infection and sometimes they can be removed
