Growing puppy, bordering med/lg weightQ: My lab puppy is now 16 weeks old and 40 pounds, and i would like to start her on topical flea medicine. first, which medication do you recommend? also, i'm not sure whether to buy a three month supply for medium or large dogs, since she's medium right now, but will probably be large for her next two doses. please advise, and many thanks! A: I usually recommend frontline plus. you need the medium for now and when the pets weight exceeds 45 lbs you will need the large. the smallest package is a 3 pack.

Cut that seems infectedQ: I have a cat that has a small cut on it's tail that seems infected. i'm sure he probably just needs and anti biotic. do i have to take him to the vet or is there another way to get the antibiotic for him. also is human antibiotic the same. for example amoxacillin? mike A: Human antibiotic amoxicllin is same as one often prescribed in vet medicine. dose in cat is 50 to 100 mg twice daily depending upon size of cat. need vet prescription for antibiotics. can try topical calendula from health food store until can get evaluated
Yeast infectionQ: I have a cocker spaniel and every few months his skin turns deep pink, he itches and scratches uncontrollably then his skin gets large flaky patches all over his body. the vet prescribes a two week supply of antibiotic each time this occurs however i would like to use a preventive care to keep this from happening. can you tell me if there is anything available? A: You need to address potential underyling causes or problem will occur. some of possibiliites include food allergy(common in this breed esp if no seasonal pattern to skin issue), inhalent allergies, or thyroid issues. have vet workup for these
IncontinenceQ: Our vet perscribed des (diethylstilbesterol), one 1mg capsule every week, to help control urinary incontinence in our 9-yr-old 65 lb. female pointer mix. can you supply this medication, or do you recommend a different drug, and if so, which one(s) and why? thank you for your advice. A: This drug is fine. check with 1800petmeds pharmacist for availability. also can use phenylproponolamine(known as proin) which 1800petmeds does carry. either is fine
