Bark controlQ: I have a 5 year toy poodle who thinks it is her job to alert me to every sound outdoors. we used to live in a rural area, where i appreciated her letting me know if someone came to the house. currently we are living in a very close neighborhood and her barking at every outdoor sound (cars driving by, people walking by, other dogs barking, the doorbell) is not quite so appreciated. it means that she is barking much more than ever before. any chance i can break her of this. i've heard about collars that shock when the dog barks but i don't like that idea too much. i've just heard about a citrus or citronella collar that, i guess, gives a squirt when they bark. does this work and where do i find one? German shepherdQ: Our 8 year old male german shepherd was taken to the vet one week ago and treated for skin infection. he was given a bath with sebolux and prescribed cephalexin capsules 500mg (4 capsules every 12 hours) also he was given prednisone 20mg once a day. after 3 days of treatment we noticed he was very lethargic, loss of appetite and his lower lip hanging down on one side accompanied by drooling. we contacted the vet and she advised to stop medication and give him benadryl 12.5 mg. he was given 2 1/2 tablets. two days after discontinued medication, he continues to drool, his lip has not improved, his energy not restored and he eats but very little. is it possible that he had an adverse reaction to the medication? are these syptoms serious and if so, should we seek immediate assistance? thank you A: Sounds like new problem with nervous system supply to facial structures. take back to vet for re evaluation

Signs and symptoms of thyroid diseaseQ: Our 2 year old german wirehaired pointer, sadie, has had a few bouts of ear infections, sodium burns between her toes and recently has had what i thought to be a "contact dermatitis", along with a thining of her fur on her flanks. our vet was not sure that it was contact dermatitis and prescribed sadie with a 10 day supply of cephalexin and a steroidal spray (that we used for the sodium burns) to spray on the affected area. we were told that there may be a problem with her thyroid. my question is what are the signs and symptoms of a thyroid problem both hypo- and hyper-? A: Hyperthyroid is rare to non existant in dogs. underactive thyroid is more common and signs are very diverse and can include recurrent infections of skin/ears, weight gain, lethargy, intolerance to cool(i.e. heat seeking), dull dry hair coat, as well as many others.
Feline acne - chinQ: My 10 year old (15+ lbs.) cat rusty developed a bumpy rash on his chin 3 weeks ago. the vet diagnosed feline acne and advised me not to use plasitic feeding dishes. i have always used ceramic and wash them after every meal. she provided a topical cream to be applied twice daily. i did and the rash became redder and finally became open sores. upon return to the vet rusty was given a shot of "antibiotic" and liquid cefafroxil (5 day supply) with instructions that 3ccs be administered daily. the vet also advised that rusty needs to be brought back in 5 days and i should expect this to be very hard to clear up and ongoing reoccurrences in future. treatment so far has cost $240 and i can expect each additional vist to the vet to cost from $50 to $110. i can't afford this treatment. please advise other options for obtaining appropriate medication for rusty. thanks! A: You could try topical 2.5 percent benzoal peroxide cream over the counter or perhaps even natural aloe vera gel or vitamin e applied to area. most of time these cases of feline acne bother the owner more than the cat and the more aggressive you get, sometimes gets worse.
