Specific medication requestedQ: My vet has prescribed megestral acetate 20mg for my cat's skin condition. the vet said it is simply a reoccurring condition that my cat will probably have forever. within a couple of times giving my cat a half of pill (every other day), he stops scratching the fur off and stops drawing blood all over his body. in other words, he returns to the normally happy and moody cat that he is, however, i cannot find it on any of the on-line vet 'stores.' can you help supply me with this medication??? A: I would seek services of another vet. this is a highly dangerous drug in my opinioon as not currently recommended or used by any experts that i know of for any conditions due to cancer risk, diabetes, etc
Yeast infectionQ: I have a cocker spaniel and every few months his skin turns deep pink, he itches and scratches uncontrollably then his skin gets large flaky patches all over his body. the vet prescribes a two week supply of antibiotic each time this occurs however i would like to use a preventive care to keep this from happening. can you tell me if there is anything available? A: You need to address potential underyling causes or problem will occur. some of possibiliites include food allergy(common in this breed esp if no seasonal pattern to skin issue), inhalent allergies, or thyroid issues. have vet workup for these
Changing medicationQ: My dog, a 30 lb mixed breed, who lives in the house has been on revolution since early 2000. i recently bought another six months supply of revolution at the beginning of february and started the applications. i have given him 3 doses since the first of february and he still has fleas. i know i have fleas in my yard as i have another dog, a rotty, living outside and he has fleas. because he weighs 160 lb i cannot afford to buy flea protection for him so i just use topical. my question is, do dogs get immune to the effects of meds after a period of time as humans do? if so, i need to switch but am concerned about overdoing the little guy. is it safe to switch and apply right away? A: Some products do stop working in some pets andit may have to do with resistance on flea end which is only inevitable as these are used over time. you could try another product like frontline plus or advantage.

Bark controlQ: I have a 5 year toy poodle who thinks it is her job to alert me to every sound outdoors. we used to live in a rural area, where i appreciated her letting me know if someone came to the house. currently we are living in a very close neighborhood and her barking at every outdoor sound (cars driving by, people walking by, other dogs barking, the doorbell) is not quite so appreciated. it means that she is barking much more than ever before. any chance i can break her of this. i've heard about collars that shock when the dog barks but i don't like that idea too much. i've just heard about a citrus or citronella collar that, i guess, gives a squirt when they bark. does this work and where do i find one? A: The prescription medication,which by the way we do carry, has a statement printed on the package that reads, to be dispensed by, or on, the prescription of a veterinarian. the non-prescription products do not have such a notation. if you are not sure, please call and we can supply you with specific information.
Asprin,rimadyl, or cosequin?Q: We have an 11 year old, 25#, cocker spaniel. we walk for 3 miles each day but a few days she hasn't wanted to walk. she twice has used a 10 day supply of rimadyl when she had trouble with steps and getting up and down. one pill and you could see the difference. most of the time she runs around like a puppy. should we give her something daily (asprin?) or my mother swears by her glucosamine. since that is covered under insurance can we give her that? or do we keep a supply of her magic rimadyl pills if she seems to be having a bad day? thanks! A: I would keep on glucosamine product long term. 1800petmeds has an excellent one called super joint enhancer. i would just use the rimadyl as needed since it rarely can cause liver or intestinal side effects. also consider giving vitamin e at dose of 400iu daily as well as vitamin c in form of ester c at dose of 500 mg twice daily which can also help long term

Hot spotsQ: About 3 months ago my dog, max, started getting bald spots on his hind legs. then they started right at the top of his front legs by the joints. i brought him to the vet and they said it may be a mite problem. they did a couple skin scrapes but were not able to find any. they still decided to treat him for them anyway and said they are hard to find on the dog. they said to give him fish oil pills once a day and they prescribed ivermectin to him. i give him .9 ml once a day. it seemed to clear up but then it came back even worst and now he is biting those spots as well. i've been giving him ivermectin again for the last 2 weeks and it is not making any progress this time. it cost about 85$$$ for a 2 week supply. any ideas on what else i can do?? A: I would see different vet. you need definitive diagnosis here as might not be mite problem at all. i would recommend vet dermatologist consult or some vet who will do skin biopsy to get to cause so right treatment is done
