HivesQ: This past holiday weekend my 9 month old chihuahua woke up with something that looked like hives on his head and muzzle. i was concerned and took him to an emergency vet service. they treated him with a shot of benedryl. they said they treat all hives this way no matter how they come about. i was told to keep on eye on him and if he developed breathing problems to let them know and bring him in. about three hours later the hives came back on his head and face, so they said i should give his 1/4 of benedryl(25mg) tablet that i already had for my own allergies. he seems to have lost his appetite. my question is how can these hives be prevented in the future? A: No sure way to prevent unless find out what he is reacting to allergically which is sometimes difficult. having good supply of benadryl on hand is best you can do
AsthmaQ: Hello my dog has been diagnosed with asthma but has not been given any treatment plan. yhe only treatment consists of a rush visit to the vet's office where he gets a cortisone shot and short- term dose of temeril. he is a 6 lb. yorkie. is there a maintenance medication? also, it is quite frightening when his wheezing worsens. are there rescue treatments we could administer ourselves? i myself am a severe asthmatic and physician as well. i am familiar with albuterol, theophylline, etc. but i have no experience with canines. i would appreciate any information. A: Sounds like he needs chronic meds like aminophylline or theophylline at dose of 5 mg per pound twice daily. also some of these dogs need low dose cortisone therapy during flareups so good to have supply of that around
Flea & tick control for puppiesQ: What should i purchase for a growing puppy? he is 15 pounds and about 10 weeks old. i hate to purchase a 3 month supply of something he will outgrow before it is all used. A: You don't say how big he will be. if he's going to be under 50 pounds you could get the medium size of lets say frontline plus and when you put on the first one you don't apply the complete tube.

Heartgard plusQ: Hi, i just took my dogs to the vet for their annual checkup and shots. i usually get the heartgard plus for 12 months through the vet. eventhough i give the medicine religiously every month on the same day, my vet is requireing the heartworm blood test at $50.00 per dog. if i buy the heartgard plus from your pharmacy, will you also require, when you contact my vet, that the bloodtest be done before you prescribe the meds? also can i order two six month supplies for each of my dogs? thanks so much, jennie A: Heartworm products require a prescription from your vet. if the veterinarian you are using requires annual testing then you will have no choice. in answer to your second question, you can order a 12 pack for each of them. if you wish to save money, we can supply the iverhart plus that is the generic equivalent for the heartgard plus.

Affordabile medcineQ: My dog taylor has allergys, the problen is the vet is charging me 42.00 for a 30 day supply of tavist. is there a less expensive way of getting it. i cant find it in your medcines, A: We do not currently stock it among our antihistamines, but until then you can purchase it at your local pharmacy. it is available as tavist and the generic product clemastine should be right next to it on the shelf. be careful not to buy the tavist-d, or the generic which contains pseudoephedrine.

Overdose my l2 lb. dog on topspot plusQ: I used topspot plus and it seemed to work for about 2 weeks. he is back to scratching and licking himself and i have found a few fleas on him. what is the next step i should take to get rid of these bugs. i'm not sure if they are in my house bit it is driving me crazy thinking that maybe they are. i was told i should give him another l/2 doze of the 3-month supply, wait 30 days and do it again for the next 4 months. it was also suggested to bomb the house. i'm concerned that i may make him sick but i need to get rid of these bugs!!!!! please help. thanks A: No. don't use another dose of the frontline. to effectively treat a flea problem, you need to treat the pet, the house and the yard.
