Proin for dribblingQ: We are in the military and are soon to be stationed in germany. my 4 year old female shep/lab mix just started on proin 50 but the military vet does not have this available and i have found a prescription supplier that will mail to apo addresses, however they only carry propalin. they say it is the generic form of proin and is a 50 mg tab of phenylpropanolamine. is this true? have you ever heard of propalin? my vet has not. A: Propalin was available at one time as a human use product. most phenylpropaline products for human use have been withdrawn at the insistance of the u.s. government. the only source we found is very careful to state that propalin has not been approved for sale to use on dogs or cats. we can supply proin on prescription by your base veterinarian and ship it to your apo number.

German shepherdQ: Our 8 year old male german shepherd was taken to the vet one week ago and treated for skin infection. he was given a bath with sebolux and prescribed cephalexin capsules 500mg (4 capsules every 12 hours) also he was given prednisone 20mg once a day. after 3 days of treatment we noticed he was very lethargic, loss of appetite and his lower lip hanging down on one side accompanied by drooling. we contacted the vet and she advised to stop medication and give him benadryl 12.5 mg. he was given 2 1/2 tablets. two days after discontinued medication, he continues to drool, his lip has not improved, his energy not restored and he eats but very little. is it possible that he had an adverse reaction to the medication? are these syptoms serious and if so, should we seek immediate assistance? thank you A: Sounds like new problem with nervous system supply to facial structures. take back to vet for re evaluation

Bark controlQ: I have a 5 year toy poodle who thinks it is her job to alert me to every sound outdoors. we used to live in a rural area, where i appreciated her letting me know if someone came to the house. currently we are living in a very close neighborhood and her barking at every outdoor sound (cars driving by, people walking by, other dogs barking, the doorbell) is not quite so appreciated. it means that she is barking much more than ever before. any chance i can break her of this. i've heard about collars that shock when the dog barks but i don't like that idea too much. i've just heard about a citrus or citronella collar that, i guess, gives a squirt when they bark. does this work and where do i find one? Expiration datesQ: I have a foster cat from my shelter. she has fleas so the shelter gave my some program to use on her since she is a bit feral and not easily handled. when i got home i saw that the program had and expiraton date of 8/97 on it!! should i still use it? A: No. this product expired 7 years ago. i would order a new supply of program, which is over the counter. i would also notify the shelter to have them remove the expired product.
HivesQ: This past holiday weekend my 9 month old chihuahua woke up with something that looked like hives on his head and muzzle. i was concerned and took him to an emergency vet service. they treated him with a shot of benedryl. they said they treat all hives this way no matter how they come about. i was told to keep on eye on him and if he developed breathing problems to let them know and bring him in. about three hours later the hives came back on his head and face, so they said i should give his 1/4 of benedryl(25mg) tablet that i already had for my own allergies. he seems to have lost his appetite. my question is how can these hives be prevented in the future? A: No sure way to prevent unless find out what he is reacting to allergically which is sometimes difficult. having good supply of benadryl on hand is best you can do
