Orbax
Q: My vet prescribe a week's supply of orbax for my cat. i just found out on your website that orbax should not be given with food. when adminstering antibiotics for my cats, i always dissolve the pill in a teaspoon of water and mix with about a tablespoon of wet food. this always works on all of my cats and is less tramatic. i do not like shoving pills down my cats mouth for a week or so. why can i not mix orbax with a little bit of food? or is it ok as long as it's very little?
A: The way you are administering the dose seems fine, just give it to the cat before you feed it.

German shepherd
Q: Our 8 year old male german shepherd was taken to the vet one week ago and treated for skin infection. he was given a bath with sebolux and prescribed cephalexin capsules 500mg (4 capsules every 12 hours) also he was given prednisone 20mg once a day. after 3 days of treatment we noticed he was very lethargic, loss of appetite and his lower lip hanging down on one side accompanied by drooling. we contacted the vet and she advised to stop medication and give him benadryl 12.5 mg. he was given 2 1/2 tablets. two days after discontinued medication, he continues to drool, his lip has not improved, his energy not restored and he eats but very little. is it possible that he had an adverse reaction to the medication? are these syptoms serious and if so, should we seek immediate assistance? thank you
A: Sounds like new problem with nervous system supply to facial structures. take back to vet for re evaluation
Shop for: prednisone

Expiration dates
Q: I have a foster cat from my shelter. she has fleas so the shelter gave my some program to use on her since she is a bit feral and not easily handled. when i got home i saw that the program had and expiraton date of 8/97 on it!! should i still use it?
A: No. this product expired 7 years ago. i would order a new supply of program, which is over the counter. i would also notify the shelter to have them remove the expired product.

Yeast infection
Q: I have a cocker spaniel and every few months his skin turns deep pink, he itches and scratches uncontrollably then his skin gets large flaky patches all over his body. the vet prescribes a two week supply of antibiotic each time this occurs however i would like to use a preventive care to keep this from happening. can you tell me if there is anything available?
A: You need to address potential underyling causes or problem will occur. some of possibiliites include food allergy(common in this breed esp if no seasonal pattern to skin issue), inhalent allergies, or thyroid issues. have vet workup for these

Levothyroxine
Q: How often should a thyroid test be done on a 7 yr old maltese who has been on the drug 2 yrs? how many months of the drug can be ordered/filled by you with a vets o.k. at one time.
A: How often to test is dependant on your pets response to treatment. if the pet is stabilized, your veterinarian may only need to do a test every 6 to 12 months. if your pet shows signs of hypothyroid or hyperthyroid, testing may need to be done every 3 months. in stabilized pets, and based on the veterinarians willingness, it is possible to have a prescription filled for a 1 year supply.

Tapeworm treatment
Q: Cat had fleas, treated. now has tapeworm, tried to treat. purchased tapeworm treatment pills at local pet supply. no instructions came w/the 3 pills. staff in store, no knowledge. how to tx? 1 pill x 3 days, all 3 at once, 1 pill weekly?? no phone number on bottle either. how should it be done?
A: I don't know what medication you purchased. if you give me the name of the product, i can try to look it up and answer your question.

Flea & tick control for puppies
Q: What should i purchase for a growing puppy? he is 15 pounds and about 10 weeks old. i hate to purchase a 3 month supply of something he will outgrow before it is all used.
A: You don't say how big he will be. if he's going to be under 50 pounds you could get the medium size of lets say frontline plus and when you put on the first one you don't apply the complete tube.
Shop for: frontline plus, frontline
