How to re-introduce older cat to use litter box
Q: My 9 year-old cat is both inside and outside. as a kitten he would use the litter box but he much prefers the great outdoors. in his older years i feel he will live longer if we can keep him inside more, but he refuses the litter box and will wait patiently at the door until we let him out. is it fair to him to try to keep him inside now? is there a particular litter now that would entice him to use the litter box? thank you!
A: You could try another litter box and a litter known as everclean which you can get at most pet supply outlet stores. if that not help then i dont see problem in letting him go outside

Signs and symptoms of thyroid disease
Q: Our 2 year old german wirehaired pointer, sadie, has had a few bouts of ear infections, sodium burns between her toes and recently has had what i thought to be a "contact dermatitis", along with a thining of her fur on her flanks. our vet was not sure that it was contact dermatitis and prescribed sadie with a 10 day supply of cephalexin and a steroidal spray (that we used for the sodium burns) to spray on the affected area. we were told that there may be a problem with her thyroid. my question is what are the signs and symptoms of a thyroid problem both hypo- and hyper-?
A: Hyperthyroid is rare to non existant in dogs. underactive thyroid is more common and signs are very diverse and can include recurrent infections of skin/ears, weight gain, lethargy, intolerance to cool(i.e. heat seeking), dull dry hair coat, as well as many others.

Black mange (scaracopic)
Q: We have just recently purchased two english bulldog puppies, when we found out that they have the black mange. we have taken them to several vets and have been using a medication called "paramite", we have also gave them a penacilion shot for four days. nothing that we have done has worked!!! is there something that you can recomend to use to treat them?
A: I would prefer ivermectin to treat these dogs. see a vet who will supply this for you

Vet medications
Q: Do you supply to perth, western australia? if so, under what conditions and costs? for example, i am interested in regular supplies of antirobe aquadrops for my cat. grateful for your early response. many thanks louise 12 july 2004
A: This is antibiotic that you will need prescription for from local vet. i believe 1800petmeds ships all over but check with pharmacist

Hot spots
Q: About 3 months ago my dog, max, started getting bald spots on his hind legs. then they started right at the top of his front legs by the joints. i brought him to the vet and they said it may be a mite problem. they did a couple skin scrapes but were not able to find any. they still decided to treat him for them anyway and said they are hard to find on the dog. they said to give him fish oil pills once a day and they prescribed ivermectin to him. i give him .9 ml once a day. it seemed to clear up but then it came back even worst and now he is biting those spots as well. i've been giving him ivermectin again for the last 2 weeks and it is not making any progress this time. it cost about 85$$$ for a 2 week supply. any ideas on what else i can do??
A: I would see different vet. you need definitive diagnosis here as might not be mite problem at all. i would recommend vet dermatologist consult or some vet who will do skin biopsy to get to cause so right treatment is done

Growing puppy, bordering med/lg weight
Q: My lab puppy is now 16 weeks old and 40 pounds, and i would like to start her on topical flea medicine. first, which medication do you recommend? also, i'm not sure whether to buy a three month supply for medium or large dogs, since she's medium right now, but will probably be large for her next two doses. please advise, and many thanks!
A: I usually recommend frontline plus. you need the medium for now and when the pets weight exceeds 45 lbs you will need the large. the smallest package is a 3 pack.
Shop for: frontline plus, frontline
