Yeast infection
Q: I have a cocker spaniel and every few months his skin turns deep pink, he itches and scratches uncontrollably then his skin gets large flaky patches all over his body. the vet prescribes a two week supply of antibiotic each time this occurs however i would like to use a preventive care to keep this from happening. can you tell me if there is anything available?
A: You need to address potential underyling causes or problem will occur. some of possibiliites include food allergy(common in this breed esp if no seasonal pattern to skin issue), inhalent allergies, or thyroid issues. have vet workup for these

Hot spots
Q: About 3 months ago my dog, max, started getting bald spots on his hind legs. then they started right at the top of his front legs by the joints. i brought him to the vet and they said it may be a mite problem. they did a couple skin scrapes but were not able to find any. they still decided to treat him for them anyway and said they are hard to find on the dog. they said to give him fish oil pills once a day and they prescribed ivermectin to him. i give him .9 ml once a day. it seemed to clear up but then it came back even worst and now he is biting those spots as well. i've been giving him ivermectin again for the last 2 weeks and it is not making any progress this time. it cost about 85$$$ for a 2 week supply. any ideas on what else i can do??
A: I would see different vet. you need definitive diagnosis here as might not be mite problem at all. i would recommend vet dermatologist consult or some vet who will do skin biopsy to get to cause so right treatment is done

Supply of medication
Q: Hi there, i live in the uk. i have a 7 year old king charles spanual who has a bad heart murmer and our vet has prescibed the following, vetmedin caps 2.5mg frusemide tabs bp vet 20mg mp fortekor 2.5 mg tabs (benazepril hydrochloride0 i have written the details down as they are on the bottles. my question is , can you provide this medication and at what price? as the cost in the uk is sky high. thanking you for your time.
A: Vetmedin is not available in the u.s. the furosemide is relatively in expensive but the fortekor is available as lotensin and there is no low cost alternative as yet.

Hives
Q: This past holiday weekend my 9 month old chihuahua woke up with something that looked like hives on his head and muzzle. i was concerned and took him to an emergency vet service. they treated him with a shot of benedryl. they said they treat all hives this way no matter how they come about. i was told to keep on eye on him and if he developed breathing problems to let them know and bring him in. about three hours later the hives came back on his head and face, so they said i should give his 1/4 of benedryl(25mg) tablet that i already had for my own allergies. he seems to have lost his appetite. my question is how can these hives be prevented in the future?
A: No sure way to prevent unless find out what he is reacting to allergically which is sometimes difficult. having good supply of benadryl on hand is best you can do

Hair loss
Q: Found fleas on my cats neck under a id collar. she now has patches of fur missing, and continuous grooming and scratching. removed collar, what else can i do. she also has some missing fur at the base of her tail. i have sprayed her for fleas, but what can i do for the irritated skin?
A: She should be treated for fleas with either advantage or frontline. also treat house for fleas as well. for itching, try oral chlorphenirmine at dose of 2 mg twice daily. add prozyme and derm caps to meals from 1800petmeds. see vet if symptoms persist
Shop for: prozyme, 1800petmeds, advantage, frontline

How to re-introduce older cat to use litter box
Q: My 9 year-old cat is both inside and outside. as a kitten he would use the litter box but he much prefers the great outdoors. in his older years i feel he will live longer if we can keep him inside more, but he refuses the litter box and will wait patiently at the door until we let him out. is it fair to him to try to keep him inside now? is there a particular litter now that would entice him to use the litter box? thank you!
A: You could try another litter box and a litter known as everclean which you can get at most pet supply outlet stores. if that not help then i dont see problem in letting him go outside

Gluecoma
Q: My son has a 1year old black lab that went blind at about 8 months old. one eye has a detached retina the other gluecoma. my son has to put drops in the dogs eyes and has a prescription for xalatan drops - which are very expensive on his limited income. is there anywhere you know of online he can order this medication that would be cheaper than his pharmacy ($57.00 for a month and 1/2 supply).
A: We do not stock xalatan. you can check on-line pharmacies to get their prices.

Proin for dribbling
Q: We are in the military and are soon to be stationed in germany. my 4 year old female shep/lab mix just started on proin 50 but the military vet does not have this available and i have found a prescription supplier that will mail to apo addresses, however they only carry propalin. they say it is the generic form of proin and is a 50 mg tab of phenylpropanolamine. is this true? have you ever heard of propalin? my vet has not.
A: Propalin was available at one time as a human use product. most phenylpropaline products for human use have been withdrawn at the insistance of the u.s. government. the only source we found is very careful to state that propalin has not been approved for sale to use on dogs or cats. we can supply proin on prescription by your base veterinarian and ship it to your apo number.
